5 Marketing Mistakes

Promoting your business is one of the most important, and complex elements of running a business. As your market continues to change, so too must your marketing strategy. Your marketing strategy will be impacted by your target market, business goals, platform, societal trends, and location. And while marketing is extremely important to every business, there are common mistakes that many entrepreneurs make, costing them time, energy, and maybe even their business.

Here are the top 5 mistakes people make when marketing their business….

#1: Making Marketing Decisions Before Researching

If you fail to research, you are most likely setting yourself up for failure. You could have the most incredible, inspiring advertisements or campaigns, but if you do not take the time to research your market and know what they want and how they want it, your efforts could very well be wasted.

Because they are excited to promote their products, or maybe out of desperation to make a sale, many business owners skip the research part and jump right into trying out different ways of promoting their business. Doing this can cause you to waste time and money, things that every business needs to succeed. If you take the time to research your market so you know what your customers want, how they want it, and how to best reach them, you will certainly see a better return on your advertising dollars and time. However, although you want to be wise and thoughtful, you must also be careful not to get “analysis paralysis” which is when you get so caught up in the research that you never actually act upon those findings. Remember, the goal is not perfection but conducting research beforehand will let you know what you need to change.

#2: Relying Too Much on Digital Marketing

This is one of the biggest marketing mistakes of small business owners. While digital marketing is crucial in today’s world, making it your sole advertising focus would keep you from capitalizing on other promotional activities. Versatility is key when it comes to promoting your business, so it’s important to think about signage, word-of-mouth promotion, attending community events, or partnering with other people and business could be great ways to promote your business. By focusing exclusively on digital marketing, you will miss out on the revenue and customers that could come through other channels.

#3: Inconsistency

It is important to track the progress and success of your promotional activities so you can understand which is working, and which is not. You need to know where to invest more money, and how to adjust your strategy to be more effective. This is an ongoing, continual process, not just something you do during your launch. And just because a campaign showed success one month, does not mean that the trend will continue indefinitely. As previously mentioned, promoting your business is a dynamic process that must continue throughout the entire time that your business is operating. Your budget allocations and broader business strategies should be reflective of this.

#4: Poor Messaging

Another common mistake entrepreneurs make when promoting their business is poor messaging. This can include an unprofessional or tacky logo, an unclear company name, or vague messaging. Poor messaging is usually the result of not truly understanding the value of your product, your competition, or what your customers really want and need. And when your messaging isn’t clear or effective, your customers will not understand why they should buy your product or service.  Failing to clearly communicate to your customers will give your competitors an advantage and negatively impact your bottom line, profitability and success.

#5: Quitting Too Soon

Finally, not understanding the true amount of time it takes to go from initial promotion to making a sale can be discouraging and may lead you to give up on marketing your product altogether ultimately leading to business failure. It takes time to see the impact of a campaign or marketing strategy, and the fruit of marketing is seldom immediate. If you expect instant gratification, you are at risk of giving up too early and possibly missing a potentially successful marketing strategy. Consistency, perseverance, and flexibility are key to successfully promoting your business.
